The Second Coming of Christ is part of the great hope that Christians have for humanity and the world: When Jesus Christ returns, he will complete God's kingdom, and earth and heaven will be renewed. He will judge all people, thereby destroying all evil and redeeming humanity and the entire world. Then the world will finally be as God intended it to be.

The Second Coming of Christ is described in the Bible, for example, in Matthew 24. There it says that people will see the "Son of Man" coming "on the clouds of heaven with great power and glory" (Matthew 24:30). The Greek word for the Second Coming of Christ is parousia, which is why the Second Coming of Christ is also called the Parousia. In ancient times, this word referred to the arrival of a ruler in his kingdom. In ancient times, rulers were often worshipped like gods. Christians adopted this term because they believed Jesus Christ to be the true ruler. The first Christians believed that the Second Coming of Christ would occur during their lifetime.

Paul, for example, saw that some of the first Christians had already died, but initially assumed that many would experience Christ's return during their lifetime (1 Thess. 4:15). However, believers quickly began to anticipate an indefinite period of time in which people could prepare for the Kingdom of God (2 Peter 3:4–9). The author of Revelation also encouraged Christians persecuted for their faith: The day will come when all people will worship God (Rev. 15:4).

Today, Christians trust that God is the only one who knows the time for Christ's return. They see life as an opportunity. Their faith motivates them to shape their lives, society, and the world for the better, filled with the hope that this world will one day become entirely God's Kingdom.
